Erin Desabelle, known as @the.dessy.dwelling on Instagram, describes her design style as “moody maximalism with vintage touches.” Her former bedroom closet definitely missed the mark on both – and it didn’t meet her storage needs either. Not one to accept less than the best, Erin turned to ClosetMaid to help revamp her walk-in, installing the SuiteSymphony system in White Timber and adding her own decorative elements to complete the transformation.

Where It Started

Before the makeover, Erin’s closet used a plank-and-pole system that she supplemented with two dressers and stacks of plastic boxes as shoe storage. The space still overflowed with footwear and other accessories. And it wasn’t at all the dark and dramatic aesthetic Erin loves.

Erin’s previous closet system lacked the fixtures to contain her entire wardrobe.

The ClosetMaid design team created a layout that maximized the space, incorporating two SuiteSymphony 16-inch towers, one 25-inch tower, six drawers and angled shoe shelves.

Erin received a rendering of her closet that she could review and approve.

After our design professionals helped Erin with the layout, she took on the rest of the project all on her own – from removal of the old system to installation of the new.

Custom Touches

Erin’s choice of the White Timber finish might seem to contradict her moody and bold style, but the simple, whitewashed laminate wood allows her other design decisions to pop.

First, she removed the old system and patched the walls. Then, staying true to her aesthetic, she repainted the walls black to match the existing flooring.

Erin’s new closet combines form and function to create a sophisticated and organized dressing room.

She also wallpapered the ceiling in a dark floral pattern, added crown molding, replaced the previous light fixture with a vintage-style pendant light dripping in crystals and hung a burnished gold-frame mirror on the left wall.

Despite a couple of hiccups, like choosing the wrong paint color at first, Erin is happy with her closet’s dramatic makeover. “Not only was it a breeze to put together, but it brought structure, storage and serious style to a space that was driving me a little unhinged,” she said.
