What’s in store for home design in 2024? Self-care and sustainability will lead the way – from paint colors to bamboo storage to kitchens that make life easier. Get the scoop on some of our favorite trends below.
Colors of the Year
While each paint company names one of its own shades as the color of the year, often a theme emerges. In 2024, many of the predicted top colors are in the blue family, which generally brings a sense of calm and peace to a space.
You’ll have a variety to test out. Sherwin-Williams’ color, Upward, is a soft, almost neutral, blue. Benjamin Moore chose Blue Nova, a deeper, violet-tinged color inspired by outer space. Valspar’s shade, Renew Blue, leans into sea-green territory.
Valspar’s Renew Blue “elevates the everyday mood,” according to Sue Kim, the company’s director of color marketing.
Not everyone is on board with blue. If you’d prefer something bolder, go with Behr’s Cracked Pepper, a soft black that could accent a wall or adorn an entire room for a moodier feel. Glidden swings in the opposite direction with its warm beige neutral, Limitless.
Whatever color you pick, remember to be true to yourself and your style – unless you’re planning to redecorate every year.
Kitchens
More than ever, homeowners will want their kitchens to be ready to entertain guests in 2024. Two key takeaways from the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s (NKBA) Kitchen Trends Report:
1. Baristas and bartenders, move over! Beverage centers will be in high demand next year. Areas dedicated to America’s favorite drinks, like coffee and wine, will show up in new and remodeled kitchens. If you’re not planning a makeover, clear off some counter space for your espresso machine and mugs or your go-to spirits and bar tools.
Beverage centers don’t have to be built in. A countertop wine rack and a decanter can create a wine nook.
2. The bigger the pantry, the better! More than 50 percent of the NKBA survey respondents wish for walk-in, butler and built-in pantries. It’s not just the increased space, but also improved function homeowners want. Another way to maximize efficient storage space in the kitchen: drawer dividers and partitions in the cabinets, which nearly 40 percent of those surveyed would like.
Walk-in pantries act like an extension of the kitchen and can hold small appliances, dry goods and even produce that doesn’t require refrigeration. Featured: MasterSuite in Autumn Brown
If you don’t know if you should follow this trend, kitchens will always be the heart of the home, so making it workable and attractive will never go out of style.
Bathrooms
While the kitchen brings everyone together, the bathroom is for alone time. Self-care continues to matter in the coming year. Oversized bathtubs, open showers and saunas will turn bathrooms into spa-like retreats in 2024.
Unwind and melt away the stresses of the day in your luxurious bathroom.
Even smaller bathrooms can feel like an escape with some thoughtful design elements. Paint the walls a soothing color, change the flooring or retile the shower – and incorporate storage pieces that give your bathing necessities a place to live.
Green Living
Nature will inspire indoor living in the near future. Think house plants, earthen colors and furnishings made with renewable resources, like bamboo.
Bamboo shelving can fit in almost any space – the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, anywhere you need easy storage.
Perhaps the simplest 2024 trend to incorporate into your home, green living can be as easy as displaying indoor plants on a ladder shelf or replacing a side table with a bamboo storage cabinet.
