The smallest family members often need the most things and the most thoughtful storage ideas. Before you set up your baby’s nursery room or upgrade your toddler’s bedroom closet, get inspiration from our recommendations.
Nursery Room
Putting together your infant’s first bedroom brings excitement mixed with hopefulness and maybe a little bit of nervousness. Relieve some of that anxiety by setting yourself up for storage success.
First, think about what you might need in a hurry. For instance, you’ll want to have supplies handy for late-night diaper changing. Designate a place for diapers, wipes, creams and ointments. Also, keep items like pacifiers, teethers and rattles in one spot for quick access.
Use a variety of storage options, from a ladder shelf to display toys and books to a wall and door rack to hold essential supplies.
Next, consider the closet. With all the sweet baby clothes you’ve received or bought, it will probably be the most fun part of the nursery to coordinate. Hang clothes in order of size so that you can easily donate or stow pieces that your baby outgrows. Sort by color to make outfits more easily. This will be a good habit to begin now so your child can get dressed on their own as they get older.
A DIY closet kit, like this SuiteSymphony option, provides hanging storage, plus drawers and shelves.
Not everything will be hung, of course. In a dresser or closet drawers, put seasonal clothing, like bathing suits and shorts, small items such as socks and hair bows, and spare items – extra diapers, refills, etc.
It may be tempting, but don’t feel like you have to use all of the closet or dresser immediately. Reserve space to accommodate new necessities as your baby grows, like shoes, mittens and coats.
When your baby begins to crawl and walk, re-evaluate the safety of your storage, moving small toys and items on higher shelves or in top drawers, out of reach of curious hands.
Just like parenthood itself, storage in your nursery room is an evolving work in progress. Adapt as necessary, but remember to stay organized no matter what changes you make.
Toddler’s Room
Once your baby becomes fully mobile, their needs will change. You’ll likely swap out their crib for a child’s bed, and they might not need so many diapers.
How might your child growing affect their room’s storage? You could find you need more hanging space in the closet as dresses and shirts replace onesies.
ShelfTrack is an adjustable storage system that adapts and grows with your child.
Your toddler likely will need more space for footwear, as shoes take over from booties. If you already have a ShelfTrack system, adding shoe shelves is easy.
As your child becomes more independent, encourage them to put their books and toys back where they belong with kid-friendly storage furniture that’s just their size.
For those things you still want to keep out of reach, like small toys and other choking hazards, use our Hideaway Hanging Shelves in the closet and fabric bins on top of bookcases or other high spots.
Organizing your baby’s and toddler’s bedrooms will help you now and will build skills for your child throughout their life.
