Transitioning seasons is the perfect time to organize areas like the garage, basement and attic. Even though these places may seem out of sight and out of mind compared to the rest of the house, they still need some TLC every now and then. Here are a few ways to get these spaces prepared for the warmer months ahead:
Garage
We want our garages to be everything – from home gyms to storage lockers.
For an efficient garage, it’s all about organizing by zones. Designate spaces for every kind of activity to create zones for summer sporting equipment, gardening tools, parking areas.
But, if it’s miscellaneous items causing the disarray, hooks and hang-up organizers are ideal for keeping snow shovels, power tools, rakes, hand tools and the like tidy.

Basements are great for overflow objects, but there are some things you need to consider before planning the storage that is best for you.
These spaces are prone to flooding so vertical storage is always a good idea. Install heavy-duty wire shelving to keep your valuable items off the floor and properly ventilated just in case of water damage and humidity.
Store important documents and precious family heirlooms in plastic, sealable bins to prevent mold and mildew.
Basements are also known to attract unwanted pests. If you store food supplies here, seal all containers and place them in drawers or behind closed doors like a pantry cabinet.
Attic
Attics feel every weather extreme and, with warmer weather on its way, yours is bound to get hot in the next few months.
To prevent damage to your belongings, do not store items in the attic that require climate-controlled environments. Find other options for your old photos, candles and other delicate objects.
Be mindful of your attic floor. Some aren’t the safest so be careful not to place anything heavy on them without checking weight limitations.
Consider other solutions, like a closet rod between two rafters to hang holiday wreaths or extra clothing, or mounted ventilated shelving for larger holiday items where possible, to help keep things off the floor.
Protect your clothing from bugs and discoloration with a portable closet.
With the right organization systems in the garage, basement, and attic, transitioning from one season to the next can be a lot easier!
