Every day should be Earth Day. At ClosetMaid, being environmentally conscious means creating many of our wire shelving products from 91% recycled content. We’re proud to say these products are certified by SCS Global Services, an international company that specializes in certifying sustainability and environmental claims, and ours is the first closet system in the market to earn this.
All of us can do our part to take better care of our planet on a daily basis with a few changes to our lifestyles. We have put together a few ideas for most rooms in your house.
Bedroom Closets
Chances are, like many of us, your closet is filled with clothes you haven’t worn in years. Instead of throwing out those old items, sell or donate them to give them a second life and save them from the landfill.
Try buying clothes and accessories made of sustainable and natural fabrics like bamboo and cotton or even recycled materials, such as plastic bottles. Also, consider investing in a few quality pieces rather than a lot of cheap trendy items.
Store your clothes in a closet with our SuperSlide® all-purpose shelving. It looks and functions beautifully and is made of 91% recycled steel content.
To achieve SCS Recycled Content Certification, ClosetMaid’s wire shelving underwent an extensive audit and review by SCS Global Services. This included product performance testing and reviews of the manufacturing process, material tracking systems, sample invoices from suppliers of recycled materials, procedures for segregating recycled material from similar virgin material, evidence of traceability and descriptions of any anticipated changes to the product, manufacturing process or tracking systems.
SuperSlide wire shelving can be used for almost any closet or storage project, and the components are recyclable when you’re ready to make a change.
Kitchens and Bathrooms
It’s especially important to pay attention to what we buy for the kitchen and bathroom because what we use there not only affects the Earth but also our health. When possible, go for an organic or all natural product over those developed with the help of pesticides or made with artificial fragrances and coloring. Recycle the packaging and look for products whose packaging is made from recycled materials. Reuse plastic sandwich bags and containers if you can (or find an eco-friendly alternative) and avoid single-use plastic straws.
If you’re installing a new linen closet or pantry, our Close Mesh wire shelving is the preferred solution because it was designed to hold smaller items like bottles of nail polish and spice jars.
Shop wire shelvingClose Mesh is perfect for use in a pantry because of its narrower spacing compared to most wire shelving.
Garages
You can take care of the environment in the garage, too. If it’s in your budget, buy a hybrid, electric or fuel-efficient car. Commute to work, if you can, on a bicycle or use it to run quick errands rather than driving. If you’re storing a lot of old stuff in your garage, have a garage sale or call a local charity to pick up anything someone else could use. Dispose of any hazardous waste in accordance with your area’s guidelines.
If you need to add storage space to your garage, choose our Heavy Duty Maximum Load® shelving. It can hold up to 100 lbs. per linear foot and is made of 91% recycled content.
You can always be confident that your ClosetMaid products are functional, durable, customizable AND environmentally friendly.
