Upgrade Your Home’s Curb Appeal

By: Staff Published: June 9, 2025

They say you never get a second chance at a first impression. That applies to houses, too! Your home’s curb appeal matters, whether you’re looking to sell, win a neighborhood contest or just feel proud of your residence. We’ve addressed three main areas that might need improvement and a bonus space to help you welcome visitors inside.

Yard

Start by concentrating on the street-level view. What will people see when they’re driving by, walking or cycling? Stand on the sidewalk or take a ride past your house to take a visual survey of what could use some attention. Perhaps the fence could stand a power wash. Maybe the landscaping is missing something. Make note of anything that stands out to you.

Don’t forget the lawn and other greenery. Trim any overgrown bushes and resod, if necessary.

planting flowers

Fill vacant flower beds with colorful blooms like marigolds to add visual interest.

While you’re out, also look at your neighbors’ yards for inspiration.

Walkway

Curb appeal extends beyond the curb, especially for people who approach your front door.

Friends, family and delivery people should feel welcomed and safe when they come to your home. Ask yourself a few questions to determine the security of your walkway. Are your pavers uneven or cracked? How is the visibility at night? Do you have family or friends who use a wheelchair or a walker?

Depending on your answers, you might want to replace your stepping stones, install pathway lighting or add a ramp.

outdoor broom sweeping walkway

Keep the walkway clear of debris for a more attractive appearance and for safety reasons. A push broom sweeps everything up with ease.

Sweep regularly and remember to shovel snow or salt hard surfaces during the winter.

Porch

Greet your visitors with a beautiful outdoor entrance. Begin by taking a critical eye to every aspect, from the porch railing and floor to the decor and the front door. You might find that repainting, repairing or replacing are in order. Or maybe you just want to spruce things up with new furniture, plants and a welcome mat.

Make the porch inviting by livening it up with a statement planter.

If your porch or deck is large enough, consider purchasing a couple of rocking chairs so you can relax and admire the hard work you’ve accomplished in your front lawn.

Foyer

An organized entryway will help your guests feel at home and comfortable and it will continue the good first impression that began outside.

The foyer floor should be clean and clear of jackets, fallen umbrellas and other outerwear.

If you ask guests to remove their footwear before entering your house, make sure there’s room for them to store their shoes by the door. Hooks or a hall tree will give everyone a place for their coats and purses.

entryway storage

Keep clutter at bay with an attractive organizer like the Modular Closet Shoe & Shelf Unit.

Hang artwork or a mirror on the wall that matches your home’s decor to complete the look.

When you take the time to tend to your home’s outward appearance, you’ll likely discover that the inside of your house feels brighter, cozier and more special, too. Why not start your curb appeal upgrade today?
