Does the thought of designing your new storage system excite you or overwhelm you? Or both? However you feel about your home organization project, ClosetMaid is here to help you achieve the closet, pantry or mudroom of your dreams. Use our free and low-cost closet design services to get started. We’ve outlined all your options below.
DIY Design
ClosetMaid’s online design tool allows you to create layouts of your organization projects at no cost to you. Start by selecting the room where your storage system will live. You can choose from walk-in or reach-in bedroom closets and pantries, single-wall garage and single-wall family room.
Take careful measurements of every wall of your closet or storage area. Also note the minimum wall lengths for your project, which are listed to the right of the Dimensions rendering. Unfortunately, ClosetMaid systems cannot be used in spaces that are smaller than those minimums.
Once you have entered your dimensions, you’ll pick the product you would like to use. Your options are Wire Solutions and three wood laminate systems: SpaceCreations, SuiteSymphony and Modular Closet.
You’ll then be shown a selection of pre-designed options to choose from, which you can view unpropped or propped. The estimated cost of the project will be displayed, and you can save or modify your design. The last step will show your shopping list with the kit or parts you will need to bring your project to life. If you’re happy with the design and ready to purchase the materials, you can add them to your cart and complete your order.
Please note that shelving and hang rods may need to be cut to size during the installation process to fit your dimensions. These are DIY products and are not cut to size for you in advance.
Professional Plans
For larger projects or ones with more unusual dimensions, you might want to engage one of our professional designers. This may sound expensive, but it’s actually affordable. For only a $5 fee, you’ll receive two designs for your storage space.
Before you begin the process, prepare by assessing your closet or room. Not only should you have all the measurements (to within ¼ inch), you also should have in mind how you need to use the space. For a closet, for instance, think about how many long dresses you own, count your pairs of shoes and consider your material preference – wire or wood laminate.
The first question you’ll be asked is to select your room from a list of nine choices, including a child’s bedroom and linen closet. Then indicate whether it’s a walk-in or reach-in closet.
On the next screen, you’ll need to describe your space as either “standard” or “custom.” A standard closet is a rectangle or square shape, while a custom closet has more than four walls or an angle that’s greater than 90 degrees. If you have a custom closet, download the custom form and sketch your space’s layout in the grid. Be sure to include the measurements on the drawing and submit the form via email. If you have a standard closet, you’ll enter the dimensions on the screen. Don’t forget the ceiling height.
For both standard and custom closets, indicate the type of door you have, if any. Choose from the nine options, such as pocket, bi-fold or one that swings to the left.
If you have a standard closet, you’ll pick your materials after entering your measurements. Your system or shelving can be MaxLoad heavy-duty wire shelving for the garage, white wire shelving, or SpaceCreations or SuiteSymphony, both wood laminate collections. The remaining questions cover your requirements and desires for your storage system. Be ready to respond with how many drawers you would like and the approximate number of short-hang clothes you have, among other requested information.
Lastly, enter your contact information and your payment information. Within four business days, you should receive two design options from one of our professional designers. After you select one of them, you can request up to two modifications before making your purchase.

SpaceCreations Layouts
Do you know that you want a SpaceCreations storage system? We have a specific design tool just for that collection. And it’s free to use!
The first step is simply defining your space – is it a walk-in, a reach-in or a custom shape? Next, enter all the dimensions, including door length. You’ll also select the door type. Now, you’ll see a 3-D rendering of your closet populated with SpaceCreations components, along with the estimated cost of the products.
On the left-hand side, you can adjust the elements, such as shoe shelves and corner cabinets, using the Auto Create tab. After you make your changes, click on the Recreate Closet button to see the revised design. If you want to manually alter the layout, use the Edit Components tab. There, you can drag and drop wire baskets, shoe shelves and drawers into the design. The system also allows you to view the layout overhead, per wall or in 3D. At any point, you can request help from one of our professional designers.
On the right-hand side of the same screen, pick your finish, hardware and other details. You can even customize the floor and wall colors to match your actual room.
Once you approve of the final design, you will be able to download several renderings and the itemized product list, as well as add all the products into your shopping cart.
Now it’s time to prepare for installation. Not sure where to begin? We have a complete guide for you.
