wire closet system
Take a look at your closet. Does it have an obvious arrangement? Could you tell someone else where to put your clothes in your closet? If you answered “no” to either of these questions, maybe you should plan to organize your clothes this weekend. What method do we recommend? There’s not one correct way. In fact, we have three different ideas, so you can mix and match them as you see fit. Plus, we’ve included a brief guide to help you decide what clothes to fold and which ones to hang.
By Color
One popular method for arranging your clothes is by color. The benefits primarily center around curating your wardrobe. By choosing this organization route, you can quickly see what pieces will coordinate. You’ll also be more aware of what color you have too much of (if there is such a thing!). Bonus: Your closet will look beautiful, like a rainbow!

Try this option by starting with the most prevalent color in your closet and continuing in descending order until you have just one or two items left. For striped or multicolored pieces, go by the dominant shade.
By Type
This method is possibly the easiest way to pull together an outfit, especially if your wardrobe mainly contains separates.

Dedicate long-hang space for your dresses and jumpsuits and double-hang space for your tops and bottoms, like skirts and trousers. You might find that you can use your closet more efficiently by arranging it this way, too.
It’s a good idea to choose your preferred organization method before designing and installing a new closet system, especially for this option, so that you are sure to have the appropriate amount of room for your longer clothing.
By Season
If you live in a region with four distinct seasons, you probably have a few different wardrobes. Depending on how much clothing you have and the size of your storage area, you might need to switch out what stays in your closet and what goes elsewhere for a few months.
Should you have a large enough closet to contain all your clothes, you may want to organize them by season. Keep the current seasonal items most accessible, along with a few transitional pieces, like a lightweight sweater or a sleeveless dress that looks good with a jacket.
Plan to set aside at least part of a day as each new season approaches to reorganize your closet. This is also a good time to glean any items from the past season that you no longer wear.
What to Fold
No matter which organization method you choose, you’ll want to store your clothing in different ways based on their type. Experts recommend folding jeans, bulky sweaters, athletic wear, shorts and T-shirts.
Carefully fold your clothing to avoid wrinkles. It’s especially crucial for men’s dress shirts and lighter sweaters. Making the extra effort will also give you a neater looking closet.

If you have the space, you can choose to hang your T-shirts and trousers. You’ll still want to fold your pants so that the back pockets are visible for easier reference as you skim through them.
As you can see, there are many ways to organize your clothes, and you can adapt them as you wish. For example, you could put all your dresses together and arrange them by color. Or you could place your winter-weight sweaters in one section of your closet. What’s most important is having a plan that works for you and sticking to it.
